This news shouldn’t be too surprising. We had a feeling that Steve Rogers was done as the Cap at the conclusion of Captain America: Civil War when he drops his Captain America shield after his fight with Tony Stark. Even more telling was him arriving sans Captain America uniform at the end of the movie when he went to go bail out his compatriots. This gave an indication that he was leaving behind his superhero identity for good.  However, despite our minds putting the pieces of the puzzle together, we have never really received confirmation of this abandonment of his post by the powers-that-be. At least, not until today.

In order to promote the Blu-ray DVD release of Captain America: Civil War, the Russo Brothers had an interview with the Huffington Post, where they confirmed what we had tentatively known all along regarding Steve:

“I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity,” said Joe. “[It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”

So, for now, Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, we all know he has to be returning for Avengers: Infinity War. You can’t have an Avengers movie without Steve yet. Now the question is will he be resuming his former Captain America role or will he take on a new identity?

What may happen, which I’m sure other sites have theorized, is that he may take on a role that he’s already taken previously in the comic books. During the 1970s, Steve took on the moniker of Nomad after giving up the title of Captain America due to his distaste towards Nixon and the Watergate Scandal. This new hero persona didn’t last very long, but it was significant enough that it could be worth exploring whenever they get around to writing Steve’s part in Avengers: Infinity War.

It’ll be interesting to see where the movies end up taking Captain America from this point forward. Although we know he’ll be making an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, we don’t know if this will be the final appearance for the character or if he’ll be taking on a completely different persona. One possible theory would be that they would kill him off, making way for either the Falcon or the Winter Soldier to take up his place. Until then, we shall speculate until more news is thrown our way.
