In an exclusive by Variety, it was revealed that Joss Whedon is nearing a deal with Warner Bros. to write, direct, and produce a standalone Batgirl film.
For a character who’s considered one of the most popular superheroes in the world, it’s surprising that Batgirl hasn’t gotten her own film yet. Usually Batgirl is relegated to the role of sidekick next to Batman. So, hearing that she is finally getting a standalone film makes me obscenely happy.
The Batgirl project, if Whedon and Warner Bros. can come to an agreement, will be the second movie from the current round of DC Cinematic Universe films to feature a female lead.
If anyone could make a Batgirl film interesting enough to catch our attention, it would be Whedon. Considering his work in the geeky realm like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Avengers, etc., we have a pretty substantial track record proving that he would know how to handle the material.
What do you think of this news? Who would you like to see in the Batgirl position if Whedon and Warner Bros. can come to an agreement? Do you think Whedon will do a good job? Let us know in the comments below.
