If any deserves to be in a superhero franchise film it’s Joe Manganiello. I know what you’re thinking, he was Flash Thompson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, but that was early in his career and he wasn’t the seasoned actor he is now. A few years ago I caught up with Joe at E3 in Los Angeles and we briefly spoke about his almost landing the role of Superman in Man of Steel but due to his contract on True Blood, he was not able to remain in contingent for the role. Now here we are with a full on D.C. Extended Universe and after a screen test while filing Justice League it would seem Manganiello gets his second chance in, then Ben Affleck’s The Batman as Deathstroke. Now that Matt Reeves has taken over Manganiello seems to be left in limbo again.

Understandably, it has been a frustrating few months for the cast of The Batman now that Reeves is completely rewriting the script. Rewrites aren’t a bad thing, but the film was supposed to be shooting by now but for Maganiello, the fate of his character is left up in the air and he doesn’t seem too pleased about it. While speaking with the Hollywood Reporter, here’s what Joe had to say about his status on Batman and with Warner Bros.

I think a lot of people are wondering what the status of Deathstroke is in the next Batman movie now that Ben Affleck is off the project as director. Do you have any information about that?
I don’t. Well, I do but nothing that I can share. I know everything but I can’t say any of it.
Was that imparted in a happy way or a downtrodden way? I’m trying to interpret the fluctuations in your tone.
[Pause.] I’m shooting for a neutral tone.
You’re succeeding.
Any idea when we’ll find out?
It’s not up to me. That’s a good question for Warner Bros. and D.C.

Manganiello is clearly annoyed by what’s been happening. This is obviously a let down for the actor who was to play the lead villain in a film directed by Ben Affleck and now it could be possible that Reeves may focus on a completely different villain leaving Deathstroke’s role reduced or not included in the picture at all. We just hope that Warner Bros. has future plans for Deathstroke in another D.C. franchise. Maybe Joe could show up in Nightwing to take on Batman’s protege?
