The untitled Todd Phillips Joker standalone film is finally picking up some steam.

Variety is reporting that Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play Joker in Warner Bros. project.

The report says that Phoenix is Phillips top choice to play the Batman‘s arch nemesis.

Even though negotiations have indeed not begun, it’s said that Joaquin does want to play The Joker and he’s technically agreed to the role.

Rumor is Phillips traveled to meet with Phoenix during the beginning of the year and he loved his pitch. Phillips is not only directing but writing the screenplay.

Now, remember, this film will not be part of the current Warner Bros DCU, it has already been reported this will be a pure Stand Alone maybe being part of a whole new slate of DC films.

Phoenix’s decision to play the Joker will not interfere in Jared Leto’s Joker which is still set to return in Suicide Squad 2 which is set to start production in October.

Scott Silver is currently co-writing the script with Phillips and word is the film will “delve into what it took for the Joker to become a mastermind criminal,” and that the movie will “take place in the ’80s and have more of the look of a gritty crime drama than a comic-book movie.”

If or when this does become official, I think Phoenix is perfect for the role. I just hope we get away from tattooed gangsta Joker and bring old-school purple suit and flower gag wearing Joker.

Are you guys excited about the casting? If not who would you want as the new Joker?
