After the recent news that Alex Kurtzman would be taking over as the sole Showrunner for Star Trek: Discovery with the firing of Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg, news has come out that CBS is looking to add additional shows inside the Trek universe to their roster. Variety has learned that the potential new shows include the following:
- A series set at Starfleet Academy from creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. The duo currently serve as co-showrunners on the Hulu-Marvel series “Runaways” and are best known for creating shows like “Gossip Girl” and the CW’s reboot of Dynasty.
- A limited series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.
- A limited series based around the “Wrath of Khan” story. Khan’s full name is Khan Noonien Singh. He was famously portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán in both the original series episode “Space Seed” and again in the film “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan.” Benedict Cumberbatch then played the character in the 2013 film “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
- An animated series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.
Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 had only been in production for a few weeks before the announcement of the Showrunners termination, which is said to be due to abusive behavior with the writing staff. Kurtzman has been involved with Trek since JJ Abrams 2009 reboot of the film which took us back to the beginning of the TOS era, taking place in an alternate timeline from the original series that’s been dubbed the Kelvin Universe (for reasons that would be a spoiler if you haven’t seen the film). Star Trek: Discovery took us back to the Prime Timeline 10 years prior to the first episode of TOS, based on these descriptions, it’s unclear which timeline these new series could take place in.
After so many years without a Star Trek show on the air, the idea that we could be getting multiple series on the air is an exciting one. However, out of these four options, I’m least excited about the potential for a Kahn Series. While I am interested in that era of the Star Trek universe, I’d rather see new prequel content in the form of comic books or novels . . . or if that was the animated series, I’d be cool with that too, for the TV side of things, I’d LOVE to see a Starfleet Academy series finally make it to air or a series about the aftermath of the Dominion War.
There’s also recently been chatter that Patrick Stewart may be returning to the world of Trek, a couple weeks ago it was rumors of him making an appearance on Discovery and now it’s that he could be starring in a TNG reboot. Personally, I think he’d be great as a fixture on the potential Academy series, taking over as the Boothby role for anew generation of officers. . . either that or he could be the Doctor Who of the Star Trek universe, taking on a companion and going on a new archaeological adventure each week.
Whatever the case is I’ll be there for it. What about you guys? What do you want to see out of a new Star Trek series?
