Drag queen superstar Kim Chi has been a longtime fan and proponent of anime and during an interview discussing her being a featured guest at Anime Expo 2018, we got to ask how she felt about Asia O’Hara’s recent butterfly blunder.
For those who haven’t been keeping up with the most recent season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the grand finale for season 10 aired just last week. During finalist Asia O’Hara’s lip-sync performance, there was supposed to be a reveal involving live butterflies. Things did not go to plan and the butterflies ultimately landed on the stage floor, barely moving. Turns out that the butterflies are kept in a cold-induced hibernation in order to avoid stressing out the insects while they’re being transported and need to be warmed up in order to wake them up.
Asia O’Hara has since made a public apology and promised to make amends by volunteering 100 hours with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). However, we wanted to get Kim Chi’s opinion on the very odd wardrobe fail.
Kim Chi: “There are so many ways to do a butterfly reveal without using real butterflies but also I don’t know what her plan was after cause after she released the butterflies, were they just supposed to just like flutter-?”
That Hashtag Show: “Yeah, where would they go? What’s your opinion about using real life animals in skits like that?”
KC: “Well, like the rule in theatre and performance, like, never work with animals, never work with children, right? I feel like she broke-, it’s like a cardinal sin in the performance world.”
Kim Chi is a Season 8 alum of RuPaul’s Drag Race and will be hosting a workshop, autograph sessions, participating in the Fashion Show, and serving as one of the first inductees into the convention’s brand new Ambassador Program.
