Breakout the pickaxes and rune gear, the Runescape beta is here!

2018 has been proven to be a stellar year for mobile games.  Jagex, the company who runs Runescape, announced today that old school Runescape has it’s beta opened to every single old school subscriber and player.  The test was limited to 250,000, which capped out in under two hours.

“Since announcing our plans to bring both RuneScape games to mobile, the community has been clamoring to get their hands on the titles. Old School RuneScape Mobile has been running 24/7 in invite-only closed beta for the past couple of months, and, with development progressing really well, we wanted to share this progress with the most important people: our members. That begins now and, soon, every Old School and RuneScape subscriber will have access to Old School mobile – the next stage of bringing two of the world’s most popular online RPGs to the world’s most popular gaming platforms”

Conor Crowley, Director of Game Development

Runescape is part of gamer and internet history.  Launched with just three servers that capped out at about 1200 people for each server in the late 90’s, and initially only playable in browser,  Jagex continued to develop Runescape as one of the first major free to play MMORPGS.  Runescape over the years has gone through several upgrades with dedicated Twitchers and hardcore nostalgic die hard players following in it’s wake, to create a long term sustainable fan base that keeps the game going.

Over the next few weeks, the beta will be open to all user play.  Not only do you get to play Old School Runescape portable after patiently waiting for Jagex to develop it, but the port will allow you to transfer your data over from the PC port as well, the first MMORPG to do so.  Complete lossless transfer is something that doesn’t happen often cross platform with RPG’s (*cough* never happens).  How well it plays in beta, or UI changes to fix the small screen however is still unknown.

This has been a long time coming.  Runescape is a massive game, with some people waiting for a port since 2015.  No news is known yet if they will attempt to do micro transactions, subscriber /VIP perks, or anything that makes it inherently a mobile game.  With any luck, other aged MMORPGS will follow in Runescapes path to find new life in a different space.

Are you excited about this news?  Are you going to dust off your old account to play (don’t lie, we all played as a teenager.)   What other games should be ported to mobile? Let us know in the comments below!
