Alec Baldwin joins the cast of the upcoming Joker movie, based on the villain from Batman comics (via Deadline).  He is reported to play Thomas Wayne, the father of Bruce Wayne aka Batman.  Announced in 2017, the film will star Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and be co-written and directed by Todd Phillips.  Production on the film begins this September, with an October 2019 theatrical release.

The Joker Film

Baldwin is just the most recent high-profile actor to join the cast of Joker.  Other big names on the film include the previously mentioned Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker, Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, and Zazie Beetz.  Academy Award winning director Martin Scorsese will be acting as co-producer.

The film will be separate from the extended DC Cinematic Universe Warner Bros is currently building.  Director Todd Philips is reportedly creating a grittier hard-boiled crime drama that takes place in the 1980’s.  The film’s sensibilities will also reflect the era.

Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin has most recently been seen in the summer blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Fallout. But younger audiences will probably recognize him for his role as Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live satirizing the President.  Baldwin won an Emmy Award for his supporting role of Jack Donaghy on the NBC sit-com 30 Rock.  He recently parodied his famous role in Glengarry Glen Ross as the voice of the title character in the animated film The Boss Baby.

The Joker

The Joker is a long running villain from the Batman franchise.  He first appeared in 1940’s Batman #1.  Originally a stylized gangster, the Joker has evolved into a near mythical force of chaos.  Thus, audiences see him as the opposing force to Batman who champions order and justice.

In 1966’s Batman television show, Cesar Romero played one of the Joker’s earliest live-action incarnations.  Fans see the role of the Joker as iconic as the Batman himself. Therefore, they scrutinize every actor thoroughly.  Joaquin Phoenix joins the ranks of actors who have played the role on film including Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto.

Legendary actor Mark Hamill voiced the Joker in many animated and video-game incarnations, starting with 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series.  Thus, fans credit him as the definitive voice of the character.
