Quibi, a new short form streaming service set to debut later this year, is going to come out of the gates swinging. They’ve struck deals with a number of high profile directors and it was just recently reported that Namoi Watts would lead Wolves and Villagers, one of the studios first series. Now we’ve learned that the studio has landed Chadwick Boseman to star in #FREERAYSHAWN, a short form series to be directed by Antoine Fuqua.

Described as a modern day version of Dog Day Afternoon, #FREERAYSHAWN, like other Quibi series, will be told in a series of 15 minute episodes. The series was written and will be produced by Marc Maurino and will feature Boseman alongside one other male lead. According to our source, the studio is interested in landing Idris Elba for the second lead, though at the time of publication, no agreement had been reached.

Quibi’s short form narratives will allow for actors and directors to experiment with an interesting new genre without sacrificing major projects. In Boseman’s case, this means he can work on this series without having to make choices about other films while also balancing his responsibilities to Marvel Studios. Quibi has yet to announce when it plans to launch, but the studio is currently in pre-production on several series.
