Hearing the words “no, I am your father” from Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back was a big enough shock. Then came the revelation that Leia was Luke’s sister in Return of the Jedi. That, of course, made the kiss between the two on Hoth cringe-worthy, to say the least. That scene now, however, makes a little more sense, given that Leia was never supposed to be Luke’s sister at all!

Leia wasn’t originally going to be Luke’s sister

In the video above, we learn that no, Leia was not supposed to be Luke’s sister. In fact, the other Skywalker sibling wasn’t even supposed to show up in the original trilogy! Based on the original George Lucas plan, Leia was just, well, Leia, giving the sexual tension between her, Han and Luke in The Empire Strikes Back a little more credence.

Luke’s sister, on the other hand, was far off elsewhere in the galaxy. When Yoda told Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Force Ghost ” no, there is another”, he did mean the other Skywalker twin. He just didn’t mean it in the sense that we know. They would wait to see if Luke Skywalker succeeded, or failed, in his destiny to destroy Emperor Palaptine.

She was never intended to come into play until a sequel trilogy. LUke’s sister would have originally aided her brother in raising up the new Jedi of the galaxy. Further, she would have carried on the Skywalker legacy after Luke gave his life… get this… battling Palpatine in Episode IX!

Speculation is that, with the uncertainty of actor’s availability and the possibility the sequel trilogy might never be made, Lucas opted to wrap things up in Return of the Jedi. Thus, Leia became Luke’s sister.

So what do you think about this? Would you have wanted to see Luke’s sister be someone other than Leia? Let us know in the comments!
