It’s no spoiler to say that Maul will feature heavily in the last four episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He’s been in all the previews, and Sam Witwer, who voices the “Dathomirian Devil,” says the story arc is the “best ever” finale in the series. Recently the folks over at starwars.com created a poll asking fans to name the greatest Maul moment in Star Wars. Based on the choices, making that choice may be difficult.
Though the character was short-lived in live-action, no list to name the best Maul moment would be complete without his epic duel with Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. The lightsaber action was exciting. Making the moment even more intense was John William’s haunting “Duel of the Fates” musical backdrop. For many, this remains Maul’s pinnacle.
Greatest Maul moment in Star Wars?
Fans of The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, however, know that Maul’s extraordinary story continued through both animated series. The aforementioned Sam Witwer voices the character to perfection. It is his portrayal that makes choosing the greatest Maul moment in Star Wars all the more difficult. First, there was Mauls’ rebirth, as Witwer took the character from sheer madness to revenge-driven renewal.
And lets’ not forget the pivotal Maul moment in which he dueled Pre Vizsla for control of Mandalore and possession of the Darksaber. (The Darksaber, as we know, makes an appearance in the live-action series The Mandalorian.) That duel with Vizsla is sure to have an impact on The Clone Wars’ finale arc that began this past Friday.
In hindsight, there are perhaps a surprising number of scenes comprising the list for the greatest Maul moment in Star Wars. For this writer, there’s one in particular that certainly makes the top three: Maul’s final duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Rebels.
