Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers in Scream

Courteney Cox will reprise her role in the next Scream film.

Cox’s news reporter character Gale Weathers appeared in all four of the previous Scream films. Deadline now reports that Cox will join the cast of the upcoming Scream 5.

Scream 5 will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the filmmaking group Radio Silence (Ready or Not). Radio Silence released a statement about Cox boarding the film.

“We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney. We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!”

Cox posted on Instagram about her return to the franchise.

A mix of old and new

Scream 5 will come from a mix of previous Scream franchise collaborators and new talent.

Wes Craven directed all four of the previous Scream films. Since he passed away in 2015, the upcoming film will have new direction from Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett.

Additionally, Kevin Williamson – who wrote three of the four Scream films – serves as executive producer on Scream 5. The new film will be written by James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not, Castle Rock).

Cox’s Friends co-star David Arquette will also reprise his long-time role in the Scream franchise. Neve Campbell is in negotiations to return as well.

The Scream legacy

The first Scream film released in 1996. The slasher-flick-with-a-twist was a hit with audiences and solidly received by most critics. The success spawned Scream 2 only a year later. Then, a franchise was born. Scream 3 premiered in 2000, with Scream 4 following in 2011. The four existing Scream films grossed over $600 million at the global box office.

Most recently, the franchise was adapted into a television series, which ran for three seasons.
