Leslye Headland (director of Netflix’s Russian Doll series) will apparently be directing a new Star Wars series for Disney+. And…well, it’s going to be pretty different from the usual Star Wars fare.

Hmm, okay. Hopefully it’s not a repeat of the Sequel Trilogy.

According to Deadline, who was responsible for the original story, Leslye Headland plans to take Star Wars in a dramatically different direction than usual for her Disney+ series. How different, you might ask? Well, let’s just say that it’ll be something new. Let’s just hope that it’ll be good.

The exact plot for Leslye Headland’s Star Wars series is still a secret, but Deadline managed to obtain a few central details on it. First, the new series will be a female-centered/focused/driven series. We have no idea what this means beyond the obvious. Hopefully, the series will be more like Kill Bill than the Sequel Trilogy.

Second, the new Star Wars series will be an action-thriller with martial arts elements. Definitely getting a Kill Bill vibe from this. Hopefully, Leslye Headland will take inspiration from those movies.

Third and lastly, the new Star Wars series will take place in an alternate universe from the other movies and series. Again, we have no details as to how this alternate universe will be different. We’ll just have to wait for if/when Leslye Headland chooses to reveal any details before we can comment on them.

Leslye Headland’s Star Wars Series: The New Kill Bill?

Cara Dune from The Mandalorian.
Perhaps the inspiration for this new Star Wars series?

To me, that alternate Star Wars universe concept is the most exciting bit about this new series Leslye Headland is developing. We could see new types of stories that wouldn’t fit into the existing Star Wars universe. We could even potentially see existing characters in different roles and perhaps even with subtly different personalities appear. Heck, we could even see dead characters like Count Dooku and Anakin Skywalker come back to life. The possibilities are endless with an alternate continuity.

The female-driven plotline is just icing on the cake for me at this point. While previous attempts at a female-centric plotline in Star Wars have had…mixed results, to say the least, Leslye Headland seems to have a good track record. While her two feature-length movies have been a bit lackluster, Russian Doll has received critical acclaim. In fact, Netflix recently renewed it for a second season. With that under her belt, Headland seems to be in good shape for this new Star Wars series.

Conclusion

Leslye Headland will be directing/producing a new Star Wars series for Disney+, and this new series will be a female-driven action-martial arts thriller that takes place in an alternate continuity from canon. Only time will tell if this new series will be good, but at the very least, it’ll be different from the usual Star Wars fare. I actually have high hopes for this series. I already anticipate the negativity, but in the words of Elsa:

Almost in the words of Elsa.

Neither cold nor flames bother me anyways.
