Well, you can check it out if you’re of the approved age, that is. But outside of stupid age-restrictions, that’s the first seven minutes of Mortal Kombat! Could this be one of the only video game adaptations that is, actually good? It sure looks like the filmmakers behind this version of Kombat are huge fans of the series. Which is really the way you get a good video game movie. The original Mortal Kombat is a cult classic, but let’s say it hasn’t aged too terribly well.

This opening seven minutes gives us really all we’d want out of the opener of a film like this. You have Hiroyuki Sanada’s, Hanzo/Scorpion family getting attacked by Joe Taslim’s Sub-Zero. It sets up their conflict and off we go! Mortal Kombat is directed by Simon McQuoid and has a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham.

Mortal Kombat releases in theaters and on HBO Max this Friday!
