There are so many rumors about this Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake that it’s like trying to count all the fish in the sea. This latest one though seems to suggest that when we finally do get to play it, fans of the original game might be surprised. Very surprised. Whether in a good or bad way, you’ll be the judge of that.

Well, given that rumor is the only source of info we have on this remake so far…

This latest rumor/report comes to us via YouTuber and industry insider MrMattyPlays. According to this report, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake isn’t going to be a straight-up HD remaster of the original 2003 game. Apparently, there will be some radical changes to the core gameplay mechanics. In particular, the game will be altered from the original real-time turn-based role-playing game. The remaster will be more like something resembling an action RPG.

According to MrMattyPlays, this information about the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is totally new, and that the gameplay change is to make the game more “accessible”. Outside of that information though, he has no idea exactly what or how the gameplay will change from the original. He speculated that it might be like the Final Fantasy VII Remake, but he added that he didn’t know and that it was purely speculation.

Star Wars: Completely Different Remake of the Old Republic?

Changes to perfection? Heresy!

Aside from that, MrMattyPlays had no new information to add. He reiterated that the rumors that Aspyr Media, Inc. will be developing the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. Those rumors, at this point, have a lot of support and corroboration from multiple sources. It’s pretty safe to say that Aspyr is making this remake, which is pretty odd in itself. Aspyr has only ported pre-existing video games to other platforms so far. They’ve never made their own game until now that is.

Let’s hope their first time is a hit.

Personally, though, I’m not entirely certain about these rumored changes to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s core gameplay mechanics. As someone who played the original and liked the real-time turn-based RPG gameplay, I feel like this could be a bad choice. This could alienate the people who liked the original. Not only that, but it could turn away even new players if they don’t like the changes. Aspyr had better be really confident about these changes and how “accessible” it would make the remake. Then again, this is all speculation about rumors, no matter how well-supported. Take this with a grain of salt.

Conclusion

According to these latest rumors, the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic will be radically different from the original. The original real-time turn-based RPG gameplay will be replaced by a new action RPG system. Aside from that though, no other details about the changes exist. We’ll just have to wait later for any official Star Wars information. Although so far, this seems less and less likely to happen.
