Tall Girl 2, the sequel to the hit Young Adult Netflix film Tall Girl is almost here! Dare I say, it’s better than the original.

TALL GIRL 2

Tall Girl 2 (L-R) Ava Michelle as Jodi, Griffin Gluck as Dunkleman. Cr. Scott Saltzman/Netflix

I fell in love with the original Tall Girl film. As a tall woman myself, I related to a lot of Jody’s plight growing up, and what comes with being taller than everyone around you. I felt the original film was hilarious, with tons of heart. The final scene at the end when we learn why Dunker’s is always carrying around the apple box will stick with me forever. So, when I learned there would be a sequel I was hesitant.

Netflix doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to YA films, based on book sequels. Just take a look at To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You or The Kissing Booth 2. Sometimes I just wish they ended with the first one…until now.

Tall Girl 2 picks up 3 months after the events of the first film. Jodi (Ava Michelle) has to navigate her newfound popularity, her relationship with Dunkerman (Griffin Gluck), as well as being cast in the lead of the school musical, Bye Bye Birdie. While sequel films of this sort tend to be filler barely moving the plot along besides breaking the main couple up, Tall Girl 2 breaks the mold.

BREAKING THE TEEN ROM-COM EXPECTATIONS

Don’t get me wrong, a breakup still happens. However, where most teen movies forget about the other character and only focus on the main couple drama, Tall Girl 2 never really loses sight of anyone. The film addresses Stig (Luke Eisner) and Dunkerman’s friendship, or really lack thereof. Fareeda (Anjelika Washington) gets an expanded storyline about following her fashion designer dreams, as well as a new love interest. They even try to humanize mean girl Kimmy (Clara Wilsey) by holding her accountable for current and previous actions.

My favorite character in the entire series is Jodi’s sister Harper (Sabrina Carpenter). I have been a fan of Carpenter’s ever since seeing her in Girl Meets World. Harper is effortlessly hilarious and has her own dreams of becoming a reporter for The Pageant Network. Honestly, I would watch that series/movie. I need it. If Laura Jean’s sister, Kitty, can get her own spinoff series so can Harper!

There are a couple of new characters in the film that are there for more character growth vs just shaking things up. First up, Stig’s sister is played by Johanna Liauw who is going through her own drama and serves as a voice of reason. Next, we have Tommy Torres (Jan Luis) who is like smooth jazz. He plays the lead opposite Jodie in Bye Bye Birdie and is a possible new love interest. I absolutely love Luis in this role. Every Time he’s on the screen he’s calming, and I never really know what’s going to happen. Will he flirt with Jodi or drop a nugget of wisdom?

As I’m sure you can tell, I absolutely loved Tall Girl 2! Make sure to watch on Netflix on February 11, 2022! Stay Tuned to THS for more reviews, news, and trailers!
