If you were to tell me back in December that the next Star Wars chapter SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY was going to have a HUGE opening weekend I would have told you were nuts! No one was giving this film any chance at all but oh how things have changed. After the Super Bowl ad everyone changed their tune especially since it looked like something completely different that we’ve been used to in the Star Wars universe. Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter are both projecting that the film will have a huge Memorial Weekend and pull in $170 Million during the four day weekend.

The first tracking estimates for the “Star Wars” origins story were released Thursday in the $165 million to $175 million range. Tracking measures were all elevated with unaided awareness at 28%, total awareness at 90%, definite interest at  55% and first choice at 13%. Now with those numbers it’s expected that SOLO will have the second biggest Memorial Day Weekend of all time with Pirates Of The Caribbean: At Worlds End owning the top spot pulling in $139.8 Million back in 2007. Now let me be the first one to say that I thought it was odd that Disney decided to release SOLO during Memorial Day Weekend instead of the obvious date of May the Fourth. I mean come on it’s a perfect date. But oh yeah there’s this little movie that just came out called AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. Disney would be insane to have such big hits coming out so close to each other. Disney decided to release Avengers a week early to give SOLO some cushion and good thing they did.

Back in December Star Wars The Last Jedi became the highest grossing film of 2017 bringing in an estimated $620 Million domestically and a worldwide gross of $1.2 Billion dollars. I’m not expecting Solo to bring in that type of cash but I’m sure it will become one of highest grossing films of the year in a busy year full of blockbusters.
