We’ve been out front on the DC’s Joker origin film from the beginning. From breaking the news of Robert DeNiro’s potential involvement, to the character breakdowns and the reveal of the Joker’s real name and potential causes for his descent into madness…we’ve been your place for breaking news on this project and now we can confirm some of our own speculation concerning the role Zazie Beetz is set to play in the film.

We have confirmed that Beetz will in fact play the role of Sophie Dumond, as we speculated here. Below is the information on the character from our original breakdown:

Supporting female (27-34) to play African American or to play Latina. Not beautiful, has a hardness to her, a single mother living on the Lower East Side, doing the best she can, trying to make ends meet; worn out by the grind of the city. She understands how the system is stacked against her and the people in her community, how unjust it all is for them. She’s just trying to catch a break.

Beetz’s character was also described as the woman who “catches the interest” of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, so it’ll be interesting to see what role Beetz’s Dumond plays in the tale of Arthur Fleck’s transformation into the Clown Prince of Crime.

Filming is set to begin on Joker in just over a month and go on through November. The film will hit theaters October 4, 2019!
