ETHAN HAWKE CAMPAIGNS FOR STAR WARS ROLE
Admit it. Ethan Hawke is a fine actor. He has been in countless acclaimed movies and given great performances in films that maybe were not that great in the end. Recently Hawke was on Conan show. Ethan had a lot to say about wanting to be on Star Wars. There is just one problem. With recent other comments he has made about other comic book movies, Ethan has essentially gone up to a father, called his son a worthless ass, and then turns around and says he wants to date the Dad’s daughter!
Let’s start with Star Wars. Ethan is obviously a huge Star Wars fan and had the following to say about joining any Star Wars cast:
“I’ve never been in one, no, and the truth is, it’s okay, because there weren’t very many of them, but now there’s a lot of them and I still haven’t been in them,” Hawke shared on Conan. “I would definitely play a Wookiee. I would do that so well.”
He goes on and talks about what it is like when he sees a friend up on the big screen:
“I’ve said it on national TV over and over again. I will audition, I’ll play Wookiees, I’ll play Jedis, I’ll play bad guys,” Hawke noted. “The last one was so good, I loved the Han Solo one, I just loved it. And you see it and there’s Woody Harrelson. He’s in Planet of the Apes, he’s in Star Wars. He’s got like every job.
“I think, to myself, when I go see [Solo: A Star Wars Story], I’m too old to play Han now, I’m gonna enjoy watching this movie. Oh, Han’s got a buddy: Woody Harrelson. I don’t get to go on?” Hawke joked. “Woody Harrelson is one of my favorite actors of all time, bar none. But I’m saying we’re the same kind of age, can’t I get an audition?”
Ethan would be a great add to any Star Wars movie. He is a very talented actor. The problem is that right now he is not a “hot” actor. Woody Harrelson used to be famous and then he melted away for a few years. When he took the iconic role of Hamich in Hunger Games he knocked that role out of the park. Every role he has taken since then he has put his own flare on and has been wildly successful. Hence his huge demand in Hollywood these days. Ethan, you are not.
WORDS THAT STAY
Then we have the recent problem i eluded to earlier. While talking to The Film Stage, Ethan felt the need to criticize super hero movies and their effects on current day box office sales. He said this:
“Now we have the problem that they tell us Logan is a great movie. Well, it’s a great superhero movie,” Hawke elaborated. “It still involves people in tights with metal coming out of their hands. It’s not Bresson. It’s not Bergman. But they talk about it like it is.
“I went to see Logan cause everyone was like, ‘This is a great movie’ and I was like, ‘Really? No, this is a fine superhero movie.’ There’s a difference but big business doesn’t think there’s a difference. Big business wants you to think that this is a great film because they wanna make money off of it.”
Saying crap like that about A GREAT MOVIE like Logan is not going to win you many fans in the geek world Mr. Hawke. I’m pretty sure there are also a lot fo fans that like both Star Wars and comic book movies. Making yourself the enemy of one fan base will not endear you to the fans of the other franchise.
In complaining about big business ruining Hollywood, are you not also dissing the Star Wars franchise itself? There is very little difference between the two franchises. Both are Disney properties after all, so calling one crap and attempting to talk yourself into the other rarely works. You might want to choose your future words more carefully. Either that or learn who you need to start sucking up to.
