A few months back we exclusively reported that Disney was hard at work on their newest animated feature Dragon Empire, since then news on the project have been quiet, until now.

According to DeadlineCrazy Rich Asians screenwriter Adele Lim and Moana producer Osnat Shurer have boarded the fantasy-adventure.

That oultet confimred some details that we initially reported. Paul Briggs who was head of story on Big Hero 6 and Frozen will make his directorial debut alongside Tangled animator Dean Wellins on the film. At this point not much is known regarding the films story. However the outlet states the movie has an Asian element running through it and a female protagonist. This film is not expected to be a musical. Also the film is expected to have a theatrical release and will not head for Disney’s streaming service.

Casting is currently ongoing here are the character breakdowns we can share with you.

JAN-NIN: Female lead character said to be the heroine of the film. Jamie Chung has shown interest in the role, Disney fans will know her as the voice of Go Go in Big Hero 6and the brand new series on the Disney Channel .

BOLIN: The lead male character who is expected to be comic relief, and a 900 year old mentor to Jan-Nin.

KATSU: Supporting male character not much is known regarding Katsu.

Lim has earned global success with Crazy Rich Asians and is currently working on the sequel to that film as well. Shurer was previously head of Pixar’s short films. She then produced Disney’s Oscar-nominated hit Moana, which grossed over $640M at the worldwide box office.
