Galaxy’s Edge: More in store for the future
Except for Solo: A Star Wars Story‘s release date, Disney calculates everything with a purpose. They have set no time announced for the opening of another large immersive attraction on Batuu, Rise of the Resistance. Disney does nothing by accident. I’ll put a million credits down that this will open after Rise of Skywalker is released because it likely has spoilers for the movie within the ride.
“Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is one of the most advanced and immersive experiences ever undertaken by Walt Disney Imagineering, where Guests can join a climactic battle against the First Order.”Disney Theme Parks FAQ
A bottle of blue milk says that “climactic battle” will be one from the final movie. A source on Wookieepedia says the Millennium Falcon visited Batuu shortly after the Battle of Crait, putting Galaxy’s Edge and the events it creates smack-dab in the middle of happenings leading up to the Rise of Skywalker. To keep the film’s secrets a secret until it hits theaters, it’s not a stretch that Rise of the Resistance could open the same day The Rise of Skywalker does.
What else has happened on Batuu?
It’s a canonized planet, even before it became part of the theme park. In Timothy Zahn’s novel Thrawn: Alliances, Batuu is where the first encounter between General Anakin Skywalker and Chiss Commander Mitth’raw’nuruodo happens while searching for the missing senator, Padme Amidala. They would later return to Batuu as Darth Vader and Admiral Thrawn on a different mission for the Empire: to investigate a disturbance in the Force.
“The disturbance is located at the edge of your Unknown Regions. It appears to be centered on a planet named Batuu.”―Emperor Palpatine, to Grand Admiral Thrawn in Timothy Zahn’s novel, Thrawn: Alliances
It’s also possible we might see the planet in the upcoming movie. The scene in the film’s trailer of the incoming ship (the one that everyone believes to be Rey’s parent’s ship) looks like it’s flying into a misty Batuu at night. J.J. Abrams has said more than once that the mystery of Rey’s parents will be addressed in Rise of Skywalker. Perhaps the planetary setting of Galaxy’s Edge holds the key to one of the hottest mysteries in Star Wars fandom.
Plan to fail if you fail to plan
No doubt that with a one of a kind experience comes millions of fans and enthusiasts wanting to share in the joy. Given that the entire attraction will not be open and functioning all at once, and there is only so much acreage, expect closures and delays, and know before you go what restrictions or issues there could be. There will be massive crowds taking in the new attraction for the foreseeable future.
“Capacity for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and its experiences is limited. Access to the park, land, and experiences may be restricted or unavailable depending on guest demand and other factors.”Disney Theme Parks FAQ
When asked why all attractions would not be open at once, Disney said this:
“We are pushing the boundaries of innovation and technology with these signature attractions and will not open an attraction until it exceeds our expectations. We also know the level of excellence our Guests expect from Disney and we take that very seriously.”Disney Theme Parks FAQ
To quote another great franchise, “Knowing is half the battle.”
