The Elementals. From top left, Molten Man, Hydro Man, (unnamed wind), Sandman

Marvel Studio’s Spider-Man: Far From Home is set to release on July 2nd. Spider-Man: Far From Home follows Peter in Europe on vacation following Avengers: Endgame. That’s when Nick Fury recruits Spider-Man to help Mysterio fight the Elementals.

If you’re like me when the first Spider-Man Far From Home trailer was released you were probably like, “whoa, Sandman and Hydroman are in this too?!” You might have been even a little skeptical because Spider-Man movies have a history of not being able to handle multiple villains. But then you think, relax, this is in Marvel’s hands. Finally, you find out that it’s not the Sandman and Hydro-Man you were thinking of, but actually two of the four Elementals, which leads you to, “who?”

According to Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home, “They were born in stable orbits. Within the black holes, creatures formed from the primary elements. Air, Water, Fire, Earth. The science division had a technical name. We just called them Elementals.”―Mysterio to Spider-Man

Elementals First Appearance

The characters first appeared in Supernatural Thirllers number 8. They were on Earth before Atlantis sunk. Before it was even built. They were unchallenged until they decided to extend their rule to Egypt. There, a man named Dann with the help of a wizard named Garret created a ruby scarab that drained the Elementals powers and defeated them. They then enlisted the help of the Living Mummy to obtain the scarab. So they could return to Earth and conquer it, but the Living Mummy refused. The Elementals took control of the Living Mummy’s mind an attempt to steal the scarab, but he broke free and defeated them.

Second Appearance

The Elementals weren’t seen again until they crossed paths with Ms. Marvel in Ms. Marvel 11-12 (1977). The Elementals return to Earth and this time they are successful in retrieving the scarab from Zephyr who had betrayed her brothers. With the help of Hecate, and the return of the Living Mummy, Ms. Marvel, defeats the Elementals.

The Elementals in Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man Far From Home sees Spider-Man (Tom Holland) team up with Mysterio (Jake Gylenhall), who claims to be from another universe. Mysterio tells Spider-Man the origin of the Elementals, which isn’t much different than their comic origin, but the writers take advantage of Spider-Man’s villains and rename them, Sandman, Hydro-Man, and Molten Man. Will these Elementals also be after a magic scarab or will it all be a trick of Mysterio’s? Being that the Elementals have only appeared twice in Marvel history (three if you count a quick reference in Dark Reign), I would love to know the comic historian that suggested using them for this movie.
