The Mandalorian Crew Gift’s Lightsabers: What Could They Mean?

Reddit can be a dubious source at times, but occasionally a gem will shine through the rubble. A photo popped up from the wrap of The Mandalorian, Season 2 and showed a unique gift that may have dropped a spoiler. We reported on it earlier today, but you can also check it out below. Join us as we analyze this a little further.

The Mandalorian patch says so much that it doesn’t say

No Star Wars project would be complete without endless fan speculation, and this photo has sparked some seriously interesting debate. Zoom in on the patch and look at the saber hilts. The one on the left is obviously the darksaber. The one on the right is not Ahsoka’s. It looks like the Anakin/Vader configuration.

Where it throws a monkey into the wrench is the saber colors. Star Wars creators (especially Favreau and Filoni) leave no detail to chance. The sabers are crossed. That means another saber-wielding character is going up against Moff Gideon and the darksaber. But who could be wielding Anakin‘s old light saber? We might have to wait for comics to start up again to find out. Also, those sabers on the patch emit a white blade. Both of them. And you know all who dual-wields white-bladed light sabers. So unless they’re introducing an entirely new character with the same blades (which I doubt), those belong to Ahsoka.

Yep, those are white-bladed sabers if I ever saw one. Ahsoka Tano

What else does this symbology mean?

Anakin’s Lightsaber: Where this becomes confusing

Anakin’s light saber changes ownership like we change underwear. First, Anakin built it (and loses it more than once). Then Obi-Wan took it when he defeated Anakin. Obi-Wan gave it to Luke to begin his Jedi training. Luke lost it on Bespin when Vader cut his hand off. The canon comic book Star Wars #2 (2020) depicts a mysterious cloaked person, who catches like Johnny Bench, snag it out of mid-fall on Cloud City.

We know after that (so far) that Maz Kanata ended up with it on Takodana, and she gives it to Finn. Finn loses it in the duel with Kylo, and then Rey gives Kylo a beat down with it. At last, the final resting place of Anakin/Vader’s saber is buried in the sands of Tattooine by Rey. When Covid-19 shut down the comic printing industry, it also shut down the climax of the story in the comics that will hopefully explain how Maz got it. Is the hooded figure Ahsoka? The blue comic lettering suggests perhaps a force ghost? Did they give it to Maz? Riddles in the dark!

Who is the hooded figure?

Marvel has set May 27th to start comics production again. Hopefully we’ll finally get to the bottom of this mystery and shed some light on how this fabled saber ends up on The Mandalorian. Who do you think it is? And do you agree on the saber hilts? What other sabers could they be? Finally, who is slinging Vader’s saber against the darksaber in The Mandalorian?
