Amber Heard and Jason Momoa in Aquaman, Warner Bros.

With the developments between Amber Heard and ex-husband Johnny Depp, it is believed that Heard’s future roles in Hollywood are in question. In fact, many trades and different publications have been reporting the rumor that Heard will be recast in the DCEU.

Heard’s most recent and biggest role was Mera the Queen of Atlantis in 2018’s Aquaman. Aquaman is the highest grossing DCEU film to date, raking in over $1.1 billion at the box office. Because of this, Aquaman 2, as well as a spin-off film about the trench scene, have been greenlit to enter production. With all the news and developments surrounding the future of Amber Heard’s career, it begs the question: who should play Mera in the upcoming DCEU films? Here are our top five actresses to take over the role of Mera.

#5 – Zoey Deutch

Most recently starring in Zombieland: Double Tap, the 25 year old actress would be a terrific Mera. She’s a wonderful actress and had a starring role in the criminally underrated Richard Linklater film, Everybody Wants Some!!. She may not look exactly like Amber Heard, but I believe she could easily look the part in costume. She has a strong resemblance to many depictions of the character in the comics. Additionally, she already has reddish hair, so she wouldn’t look as ridiculous as Heard did in that bright red wig.

#4 – Alicia Vikander

Academy award recipient Alicia Vikander would be a great replacement of Amber Heard as Mera. She’s an incredible actress, seeing as though she won an Academy Award for her performance in 2015’s The Danish Girl. Although she may not look exactly the part, she can be very intimidating and strong on screen, as seen by her performance in the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot.

#3 – Blake Lively

A fan favorite casting and one we can also rally behind would be Blake Lively portraying Mera. She would obviously look great as Mera, and she has a history with DC films. She met her husband, Ryan Reynolds, on the set of the box office failure and forever memed, Green Lantern. Ryan has moved on to lead a successful franchise in the Deadpool films, so I believe Blake Lively should get that same opportunity. A Marvel vs. DC rivalry within that family could be a lot of fun to watch.

#2 – Ana de Armas

A choice not being heavily discussed, but one I think is brilliant would be Ana de Armas as the queen of Atlantis. The Cuban-Spanish actress was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the murder mystery film, Knives Out. She also starred in the critically acclaimed sequel, Blade Runner 2049. She would very much look the part of the Mera character, and also has a resemblance with Amber Heard. It would be a very smooth transition. Additionally, she has a connection to the DCEU. She is currently in a relationship with the most recent Batman actor, Ben Affleck.

#1 – Emilia Clarke

Did you think it would be anybody else? All the fans and news outlets like ourselves are in agreement. Emilia Clarke would be a perfect Mera. She just wrapped up her time with the acclaimed and iconic series, Game of Thrones. There should be plenty of time in her schedule now to take on another big franchise role. She hasn’t broken through on the big screen quite yet, so portraying Mera in a blockbuster sequel would be a great career choice. Additionally, she is very close with Aquaman actor, Jason Momoa, from his time on Game of Thrones.
