Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red just announced that they’ll be giving away next-gen upgrades for the game in 2021.

“Did someone say ‘free’?”

On June 19, 2020; CD Projekt Red announces that they’ll be releasing next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2021. This includes versions for both PS5 and Xbox Series X. Even better: all prior owners of Cyberpunk 2077 will get it for free. That’s right, free.

No one says no to free stuff.

This announcement comes on the heels of yesterday’s announcement of Cyberpunk 2077‘s release being delayed to November 19. It seems that this announcement of free next-gen upgrades is an attempt to win back goodwill for the same. If it is, it’s working very well. To clarify though, owners of a specific console version of Cyberpunk 2077 will be getting only that next-gen console version and not the other. For example, anyone who owns the PS4 version of the game will get the PS5 version come 2021 only, and not the Xbox Series X version as well. Ditto for owners of the Xbox One version.

CD Projekt Red also didn’t mention an exact release date for this next-gen upgrade for the game. When asked, CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kicinski said he wasn’t sure and there may be delays. But, he did specify:

“We are sure that we will deliver it next year, but it was not even internally planned for a certain day, so it’s hard to say whether there is a potential delay of the next-gen.”

Of course, this very likely means delays. But then, the next-gen upgrade seems to have been announced on short notice. You’d expect delays for something like this.

Conclusion

Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be released on PS5 and Xbox Series X in 2021, so woot! Sure, we don’t know exactly when in 2021 this will launch, but we know it’s definitely coming. It’s a bit of good news to stave off the disappointment that came with yesterday’s news of Cyberpunk 2077‘s release date delay to November 19, so that’s something.
