The next film in the Evil Dead franchise will be titled Evil Dead Rise.

Earlier this month Campbell confirmed the return of the franchise. At the time he stated the film would be called Evil Dead Now. The film has since been redrafted and the name updated.

Campbell also confirmed Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) would write and direct the project. The director of the original Evil Dead, Sam Raimi, reportedly hand picked Cronin for the role. Cronin tweeted his excitement to be part of the Evil Dead team earlier this month.

Campbell himself starred as Ash Williams in the original movie The Evil Dead and sequels Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. The franchise was revived in 2013 with a new Evil Dead film and follow-up TV series Ash vs Evil Dead. After the series ended in 2018, Campbell stated he would retire from playing the role. He remains a producer on the upcoming Evil Dead Rise, but will not reprise his role as Ash Williams.

“You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic. We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue,” said Campbell.

With Campbell not set to return, it is unclear if the new Evil Dead will be a continuation of the original narrative or a reboot. Either way, the franchise has long been a cult favorite and is sure to attract fans old and new alike.
