Thanks to IDW Publishing I was able to get an early look at the highly anticipated TMNT: The Last Ronin #1. This comic written Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, and Tom Waltz is a must read for any, and I mean any TMNT fan!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin #1
The Last Ronin #1 Story
After reading TMNT: The Last Ronin #1, I now see what all the hype has been surrounding this comic. Is it a must read? Yes it is! Eastman, Laird, and Waltz knocked it out of the park! Because of the many reveals throughout the comic, I will keep this spoiler free, but as the story goes you will want to read more and more. And of course we all want to know, who is The Last Ronin?
The story wastes no time in getting the action going. We follow a lone and unnamed Turtle on a mission through New York City. Set in the future, the Ronin is ready seek justice/revenge for his fallen family. You learn very quickly that this isn’t the NYC you are familiar with. Surrounded by wall and cover with cameras and other surprises you soon learn that it will be a challenge for the Ronin to be successful, or even surviving as he tries to get into the city and complete hi mission. The action, suspense, and emotions are non-stop, as the details about the Ronin’s mission become more clear and how he deals with failure on his terms!
The art team of Kevin Eastman, Esau & Issac Escorza, Antonio Delgado, and Shawn Lee delivered in a big way for this comic. The whole look of the book is amazing. While the story had a very dark look throughout most of the comic, the creative team was able to put a lot of details in every page that kept your attention. The pictures alone told their own story as the comic progressed. Also the text was placed well throughout the comic. From a good font that was easy to follow to the font used to show the sound effects, it was easy to read without being distracted.
My Final Thoughts
The TMNT: The Last Ronin #1 is one of the best comics I have read in a long time. When I was finished I wanted more. One of the best things about this story is how it stands on it’s own. You do not have to worry if you have not read the past comics. As long as you are familiar with the TMNT you will be able to understand what is going on. Also be ready for an emotional ride as this story goes. There will be some dark moments that will make you hold your breath. So, get ready on October 28th and get to your local comic book shop early (especially if you did not pre-order it) and grab a copy of TMNT: The Last Ronin #1.
