If you have well-known parents, it can be hard to step out of their shadow. And if your parents are literal superheroes, it’s even harder.

Jupiter’s Legacy explores two generations of superheroes as the old guard attempts to pass the world-saving torch to their children. After nearly a century of keeping mankind safe, the world’s first generation of superheroes must look to their children to continue the legacy. But tensions rise as the young superheroes, hungry to prove their worth, struggle to live up to their parents’ legendary public reputations — and exacting personal standards.

Based on the trailer, it looks like Jupiter’s Legacy will explore a more grounded, emotional side of the superhero spectrum. It’s a series heavily focused on familial bonds, though of course you’re getting superhero action as well.

Netflix adapted the series from Mark Millar’s comic series of the same name. Thematically, the story relies on morally gray characters to redefine how we think about heroes.

“It’s no longer about superheroes vs supervillains,” said Millar during a WonderCon panel. “Cause if you think about it, in real life nobody is a hero or a villain. Everybody’s just people with flaws, aren’t they? Everybody’s got a dark side, everybody lets down their friends, everybody goes off with someone they shouldn’t go off with. When you add a costume to it, it gives you a drama you’ve never seen before.”
