Are you looking for a NEW RELEASE in Film or Television to watch this weekend!? Well, That Hashtag Show has you covered in our new weekly series! So, make sure to come back each week as we compile all of our recommendations for you to check out on your days off. This weekend includes some major disappointments for theatrical releases, as well as a very exciting return for television! So, let’s get into it…

NEW RELEASE FILMS

OLD (IN THEATERS)

M. Night Shyamalan is back with a new thriller that might seem like an original idea, but is actually based upon a graphic novel called “Sandcastle”. This film that follows an ensemble cast as they start aging rapidly on a private island has pretty much split critics right down the middle… in a hate-it-or-love-it situation. That Hashtag Show’s own Jessica Lancaster, says that the film “doesn’t dive deep enough to make an impact worthy of its premise, but it sets a thrilling pace that turns the distant dread of ageing into an unrelenting fear of the present.” Of course, it will be up to you to decide, if this trip is worth taking.

SNAKE EYES: G.I. JOE ORIGINS (IN THEATERS)

Henry Golding (A Simple Favor, Crazy Rich Asians) dons the mask and becomes an action hero in Paramount’s next attempt to build a G.I. Joe franchise. Despite an incredible cast that includes Warrior’s Andrew Koji, Ready or Not’s Samara Weaving and the legendary Iko Uwais from The Raid films… Snake Eyes is getting very mixed reactions from critics. That Hashtag Show’s own Junior Felix says that “the film had so much promise but falls flat with a muddled script and cheap CGI.”

JOE BELL (IN THEATERS)

Lost in the Reel’s Full Video Review of Joe Bell.

This film based upon a true story, from the writers of Brokeback Mountain; has been dividing critics as well. Joe Bell follows a father as he walks across the country to talk about the repercussions of bullying, in honor of his gay son. While some critics are saying that the movie should have concentrated on the son, rather than the father… I thought that “Joe Bell” was a heart-wrenching and powerful film, with outstanding performances from Mark Wahlberg and Reid Miller”. Either way, I believe that this is an important film that should be seen, despite its many flaws.

JOLT (AMAZON PRIME)

Lost in the Reel’s Full Video Review of Jolt.

Kate Beckinsale is back and ready to take over a new franchise with Amazon Prime’s Jolt. Please go into this film expecting something ridiculous and not very well put-together, because if you’re looking for another Atomic Blonde… this is not it. While Jolt is not going to win any awards and to be honest, it’s not even all that good; it might be worth your time if you want to watch a silly, but entertaining B-Movie. Luckily, you will not be paying for this one…

NEW RELEASE TV

TED LASSO: SEASON 2 (APPLE TV+)

Apple TV+’s flagship sports-comedy Ted Lasso returns for a new season, riding high on its whopping 20 Emmy Nominations! And although the first couple of episodes of this new season are a little bit weak. As it progresses, it recreates the fire that it started in the first season. I still believe that it is one of the best television shows on the air right now and it is not to be missed. The first episode is streaming on Apple TV+ now, and tune in every Friday for a new episode!

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: REVELATION PART 1 (NETFLIX)

He-Man and all of the other Masters of the Universe are back in Kevin Smith’s new reiteration of the classic series. Despite being a part of some major controversy, this is a must-watch for fans who grew up on the original show. That Hashtag Show’s own Ben Kliewer says that “Netflix’s Kevin Smith-created Masters of the Universe: Revelation is a must watch for any He-Man fan, animation lover or those who just like good characters and storytelling.” By the power of Grayskull! The first part of this epic series is streaming now and part two will be streaming on Netflix at a later date.
