Can’t get enough of zombies in The Walking Dead? Well, AMC has the solution for you in the form of Tales of the Walking Dead soon-ish. Maybe.

AMC Networks announce on Variety and other news sites that they have greenlit the production of Tales of the Walking Dead. They even have a timeline for us today. Apparently, we will see an initial season comprised of 6 episodes go into production sometime early next year. The actual premiere of this initial season is something we will see on AMC+ and AMC in Summer 2021. It’s a pretty specific timeline for a show they only just greenlit. It seems to bode well for this series if they already have such extensive and specific plans for it.

AMC has also released other details of Tales of the Walking Dead aside from that tentative release date for us today. Apparently, this spinoff series will be an anthology series instead of having a single big overarching storyline. Each episode will be an hour long, and feature standalone stories independent of one another. The episodes will feature both new characters, and existing ones within The Walking Dead universe. We don’t have any details on which characters will make a reappearance in this spinoff though, since AMC only just greenlit it.

“‘The Walking Dead’ is a show that made television history and attracted an army of passionate and highly engaged fans. We see so much potential for a wide range of rich and compelling storytelling in this world, and the episodic anthology format of ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’ will give us the flexibility to entertain existing fans and also offer an entry point for new viewers, especially on streaming platforms. We have seen the appeal of this format in television classics like ‘The Twilight Zone’ and, more recently, ‘Black Mirror,’ and are excited to engage with fans in this new way, against the backdrop of this very unique and engrossing world.

Other details from Tales of the Walking Dead include the fact that Channing Powell (writer and producer for The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead) will showrun this spinoff. He will also work closely with Scott M. Gimple, chief content officer of the Walking Dead Universe.

Conclusion

AMC just greenlit the production of Tales of the Walking Dead. This will be an anthology spinoff series, focusing on standalone stories featuring both new and old characters from The Walking Dead universe. If everything goes right, we will get to see this horror anthology on AMC+ and AMC sometime in Summer 2022.
