AMC looks like they’re trying to get into the world of sci-fi animation (traditional hand-drawn animation to boot) with their new series Pantheon. And from the looks of their first look clip, it might be one doozy of a cyberpunk story. Don’t believe me? Then check it out for yourself below:

A New Cyberpunk Conspiracy Story?

Man, now that’s one very controlling helicopter mom.

AMC recently revealed this extended first-look clip for Pantheon on YouTube. Said first look clip initially looked like an overbearing mom trying to police her daughter’s chats with a mysterious stranger on the internet. A stranger who only communicates in emojis to boot, for some odd reason. As the chat goes on though, said stranger then provides a string of odd emojis that the mom somehow manages to interpret as the name of a poem she knows. This immediately makes the mom head to her room and lock the door. Her daughter follows her though, and listens in on a mysterious conversation her mom has with someone named Dr. Waxman, demanding to know what he’s done with her husband or if it’s going to be “war”.

Said Dr. Waxman though ignores her and hangs up on her. We then get a scene where he phones his superior, informing him that there’s been a “breach” where someone reached out to David Kim’s family, who is presumably what the mom and her daughter were. Not only that, but Dr. Waxman informs his superior that they need to cut “his” network access immediately. It’s not clear who this “he” is, but it’s likely David himself. His superior tries to calm him down, but it doesn’t seem like he’s convinced.

The first look clip for Pantheon finishes with a look at the opening sequence. The said sequence is just as mysterious as the clip, showing an ancient Greek statue dissolving to reveal a brain within the head. The brain then dissolves into mots of light to form an electronic head, which then stares into the camera. Well, color me impressed here. I will eagerly await more.

Pantheon: Details

"Pantheon" screenshot showing a bunch of people seated at a desk and staring at a hologram of a human brain.
Why do I get the feeling that they’re not just looking at a generic hologram of a brain here?

Pantheon is an upcoming sci-fi cyberpunk animated series from AMC Networks. Titmouse (Motorcity, Big Mouth, Mike Judge’s Beavis, and Butt-Head) is the animation studio behind it. Craig Silverstein (TURN: Washington’s Spies, Nikita, Terra Nova) is the writer, creator, and showrunner; with him executing co-producing alongside Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio, Ben Kalina and Juno Lee.

As for what Pantheon is about? Well, the video description of that first look clip also gives us a synopsis for the series. Check it out below:

“In this first look at AMC+’s animated sci-fi drama Pantheon, bullied teen Maddie (Katie Chang) is receiving mysterious help from someone online: a stranger soon revealed to be her recently deceased father, David (Daniel Dae Kim), whose consciousness has been uploaded to the Cloud following an experimental destructive brain scan. David is the first of a new kind of being – an “Uploaded Intelligence” or “UI” – but he will not be the last.”

Pantheon will premiere on September 1, 2022 only on AMC+.
