Not only is Marvel planning to give us more Shang-Chi, they’re planning to make sure we have the best man for the job. Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton will officially return to write and direct the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Cretton signed an exclusive multi-year deal with Disney companies Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective. In addition to the Shang-Chi sequel film, he’s also already working on a new Marvel series.

“Destin is a powerhouse storyteller with impeccable taste in material. As we continue to expand our roster, Destin’s unique voice will help usher in an exciting slate of content for our global audience,” said Tara Duncan, President of Freeform & Onyx Collective.

Cretton’s Shang-Chi proved the highest-grossing domestic film to release in 2021, bringing in over $224 million. (Huge numbers as the box office continues to feel the impact of the ongoing pandemic.)

Marvel President Kevin Feige said the studio is excited to expand their relationship with Cretton.

“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started,” said Feige.

At this time, we don’t have any details about Cretton’s upcoming Marvel series. (It might be connected to Shang-Chi, or it might be something else entirely.) He already has another series, American Born Chinese, set for Disney+.

“Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective. I can’t wait to explore new stories and build new worlds with this community,” said Cretton.

You can stream Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings now on Disney+.
