It was only a matter of time. Nathan Drake is finally following his female counterpart Lara Croft from the video game console to the big screen. The Indiana Jones-esque protagonist of developer Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Uncharted game series first adventured his way across our screens in 2007. In development for some time, the film is finally coming to fruition. Dan Trachtenberg will direct, withSpiderman: Homecoming and Avengers starTom Holland as the title character. That Hashtag Show now brings you some exciting, exclusive news about the film and its casting.
It’s believed that Uncharted will loosely follow the plot of 2007’s Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. In the game Nathan Drake, a descendant of explorer Sir Francis Drake, searches for El Dorado, the lost city of gold. This will be Drake’s official origin story, and will also feature Drake’s mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan.
Uncharted Shortlist for “Sully”
We previously learned that Tom Holland will indeed portray Nathan Drake, which the studio describes as “edgy, intellectual, focused as hell, but also complete isolated….” That makes him “the perfect protégé for Sully”, but his sense of isolation “leads him to chase risk and make sometimes reckless decisions.”
For the character of Sully, the studio is looking for a Caucasian male, 40-49. The impressive short list for the Uncharted character features some of Hollywood’s current, big-ticket, lead actors. Among them is Holland’s Avengers: Infinity War (and Endgame?) co-star Chris Hemsworth. Joining him on the “Interest” list are also Matthew McConaughey, Wonder Woman 1984’s Chris Pine, and Woody Harrelson.
Bio for Victor “Sully” Sullivan
Here is the studio’s official biography for Sully:
Rugged and handsome, equal parts refinement and contagious charm, Sully is the kind of guy who turns heads when he walks into the room. Sully is a highly skilled career criminal – he knows how to read a room quickly and impressively, and nothing gets past him. He becomes Nate’s mentor and teaches him everything he knows, helping mold him from a small-time pickpocket into a skilled thief. Sully has a fun banter with Nate, and though at moments he feels like a father figure to him, in truth he is self-interested above all else. Sully does care for Nate, and goes against his instincts to save him in the end.”
Based on the Uncharted character’s description, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson jump to the top of that short list. Both have experience portraying a character with those same or similar characteristics: McConaughey as Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt in Sahara, and Harrelson as Tobias Beckett in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Regardless of whoever plays the Uncharted scoundrel, we’re sure to learn who Sony-Columbia casts as Sully soon. Production for the film is slated to begin in July 2019.
