The 80’s film, Willow is the definition of a cult classic of the genre. George Lucas’s original film is returning to Disney+ as a series next year. With any series, you need a pretty visionary mind to direct it. Enter Jon M. Chu. The director of Crazy Rich Asians and In The Heights is set to direct the pilot episode of the show and be an executive producer. In addition to Chu, Jonathan Kasdan and Wendy Mericle are the showrunners. Kasdan also wrote the pilot for the series.

Here’s what Chu had to say about the upcoming show.

Growing up in the ’80s, Willow has had a profound effect on me. The story of the bravest heroes in the least likely places allowed me, an Asian-American kid growing up in a Chinese restaurant looking to go to Hollywood, to believe in the power of our own will, determination and of course, inner magic. So the fact that I get to work with my heroes from Kathleen Kennedy to Ron Howard is bigger than a dream come-true. It’s a bucket-list moment for me. Jon Kasdan and Wendy Mericle have added such groundbreaking new characters and delightful surprises to this timeless story that I can’t wait for the world to come along on this epic journey with us.

The Best For Last On Willow

But the news doesn’t stop there. Ron Howard, the director of the original film, is returning as an executive producer. Bob Dolman, the writer of the original film, is a consulting producer on the project as well.

Willow wouldn’t be Willow without Warwick Davis however. In the best news of the entire day, Davis is reprising his role as the unlikely hero.

The details for the plot and all that are under wraps. The series starts shooting next year sometime.
