Turns out, you won’t have to download the Funimation app onto your PS5 and/or Xbox Series X when you get it/them. Sony and Microsoft will take care of that for you.

Why do you have no eyes, Funimation icon?

Funimation has just announced that the Funimation app will be available on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S at launch on November 10. No more having to hunt for the app on the internet from the console. The app will be already downloaded and waiting for you to use right from the get-go.

This news comes on the heels of Funimation’s previous announcement for the PS5. Apparently, both versions too will have the app already downloaded onto it and ready to go. So when you all get a PS5 on November 12 (November 19 for everywhere outside the US), you can stream anime to your heart’s content.

Please note that the Funimation app is only available in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. So if you live outside these countries…well, perhaps Funimation might release the app to your country later. One of these days.

Funimation…or Crunchyroll?

Some Funimation anime.
A short list of Funimation anime.

It’s interesting that Funimation is making their app available to both the PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch. Crunchyroll is actually doing the same thing. This means that everyone with a PS5 and/or Xbox Series X will get not one, but two anime streaming services ready to go at launch. Not only that, but both services are free. You only need to weather the storm of some ads, and you don’t have to pay a cent to watch anime. Personally, I wish more networks would use this model.

Of course, this begs the question: which app should you use? Funimation or Crunchyroll? Personally, I use mostly Crunchyroll out of convenience. Funimation, however, does have a couple of anime that only they have. You might want to main one, and go to the other only if they have an anime you want to watch.

Of course, there are credible rumors that Sony is looking to acquire Crunchyroll. With Funimation under their belt as well, the choice might soon no longer matter. So enjoy the days of Crunchyroll independence while it lasts, folks. You may or may not like what happens when they get in bed together.

Conclusion

The Funimation app will be available to both the PS5 and the Xbox Series at launch on their respective dates. Since the Xbox Series launches tomorrow on November 10, and the PS5 on November 12 (19 for outside the US), you won’t have to wait long to watch anime on your brand new consoles.
