Grand Admiral Thrawn is one of the most popular Extended/Legends universe characters to make the crossover to Star Wars canon. He was name dropped in the second season of The Mandalorian and featured prominently in Star Wars Rebels. After the conclusion of the second season of The Mandalorian, rumors went out of control about who would play Thrawn. Would it be Robert Downey Jr. or maybe Benedict Cumberbatch? It turns out we already had him as his voice actor. From Star Wars Rebels, Lars Mikkelsen is Grand Admiral Thrawn.

According to Small Screen UK, Lars Mikkelsen has signed on as Grand Admiral Thrawn for the upcoming Ahsoka series on Disney+. Not much is known about that series, but the first glimmer we had was Ahsoka asking about the Admiral.

Lars Mikkelsen is, of course, the older brother of Mads Mikkelsen. He’s probably not known as widely to American audiences. His roles include: Sherlock villain Charles Augustus Magnussen, The Killing, and House of Cards. Until we get confirmation from LucasFilm or Disney, this is still just a rumor. It’s a pretty well sourced rumor, but a rumor nonetheless.

Just what could this mean for Star Wars shows going forward though? We’ve heard that they want all the shows to have their own overarching stories that meet up in a big event. Similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they want these Star Wars shows to converge with a big villain. Thrawn is almost certainly that big villain.
