Hello everyone, your friendly neighborhood Professor Hulk here. I’m about to drop some knowledge on some exciting stuff going on in the film and TV world. Last week we shared with you details on Star Wars. This week, we’re talking about Donkey Kong!

With the recent announcement of the cast of the Super Mario Bros. movie, the internet immediately had opinions (as is often the case); many people speculated what could be coming from Nintendo in the future.

I’ve asked my sources and I can exclusively share that a Donkey Kong movie is also in development at Universal. Interestingly enough, Illumination will not be working on this project. It will instead be created by a different animation studio.

The Details On A Donkey Kong Film

From what I could ascertain from my sources, the film will explore Donkey Kong (or DK’s) origin as well as tie it into Donkey Kong Country and its a colorful set of characters. Characters I’ve confirmed that will be in the film include Diddy Kong, Candy Kong, Chunky Kong, Cranky Kong, Funky Kong, and King K. Rool.

While I did investigate if this will tie into the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie and if Seth Rogen, who is set to play Donkey Kong in the Super Mario Bros movie, is set to return; no definitive answers were given although it’s said that the possibility is there.

One interesting point was that there seems to be a strong hint that this could be a Peacock exclusive film. It’s been said that Universal Studio’s leadership is strongly pushing for films to be Peacock exclusives, bypassing theatres. While there was no definitive answer, either way, there seems to be strong interest at least in putting this on Peacock. Speculation on my part is that the studio is waiting to see how a film like Halloween Kills does in terms of boosting Peacock subscriptions before any hard choice is made.
