Hello everyone, your friendly neighborhood Professor Hulk, here. I’m about to drop some knowledge of some exciting stuff in the film and TV world. Last week we shared with you details on an Infamous film. This week, we’re talking about Beverly Hills Cop.

We can exclusively share that Paramount is developing a revival film of the classic 80’s franchise, Beverly Hills Cop.

What Of The Netflix Film?

You may recall that Paramount optioned the 4th film with Netflix. However, due to COVID-19, the production was delayed. Adding to those issues, Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have made commitments to other projects (Ms. Marvel, Batgirl, etc.). Adding to that, Paramount launched Paramount+, which means they’ll want to emphasize content on their platform and not on rival services.

While this project isn’t completely dead, it is on life support, and meanwhile, Paramount is looking to add continuations of its existing franchises onto Paramount+ to bolster their subscriber count.

The 4th film may still happen from what my sources are telling me, but Paramount is also looking at a fresh new approach and one that’s on Paramount+.

Details On The Paramount+ Beverly Hills Cop

This new film will take after Stranger Things and other properties set in the ’80s and have a new actor portraying Axel Foley. It’s said that the Netflix film will be a continuation of the original series, so Paramount sees this new film as having its own continuity. If both are popular, they aren’t too similar in plot.

The plot will closely resemble the original, with Foley investigating the death of his friend in Los Angeles. Some story elements will be updated; although the studio doesn’t want it to stray too far from the original. They’re keeping it simple and close to the source material.

Who Is The Studio Looking At For The Roles?

A screenwriter is currently working on the script, and a director is being looked at. Paramount is also looking to cast the lead role and many of the substantial side roles relatively soon.

It’s said that the studio is looking for a Caleb McLaughlin-type for Axel. An actor with comedic chops who can elevate the material on screen. This isn’t to say Caleb is precisely the actor they’ll cast, but studios will often tell casting directors the type of actor they want as shorthand to detail many of the traits they want. So Caleb could land the role, or we will get someone similar.

For Taggart and Rosewood, it’s said that the studio wants Billy Magnussen and Dylan Minnette types for both roles. The studio is eager to get those actors but again is using this as shorthand in case the actors are not interested.

When Is The Film Coming?

Considering that Paramount wants to invest more in Paramount+; an announcement is likely coming soon to give subscribers confidence and give those on the fence a reason to subscribe. The studio is putting in a lot of effort and wants to show both investors and the general public that Paramount+ can contend with HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, and the other major streaming sites.

In 2022 there will be a new emphasis on the service, so expect announcements coming for many new series and movies throughout the year. With an announcement and filming, we’ll likely see this in late 2023 or early 2024 at the earliest.
