Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition is finally making its way home. In celebration of First Contact Day on April 5th, 2022, the new cut of the first Star Trek film is coming to Paramount+. The newly restored film arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in September from Paramount Home Entertainment. In an even more exciting twist, the film is also screening in theaters thanks to Fathom Events and Paramount Pictures for an exclusive two-day event on May 22nd and May 25th. Tickets go on sale at FathomEvents.com on April 8th.

Originally released in 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture successfully launched the film franchise for Star Trek. It was rushed to theaters and had incomplete effects. In 2001 director Robert Wise revisited the film, enhancing the visual effects and editing the film. That updated version was released on DVD in standard definition but has never seen a high definition release. Now, the film sees its first HD release ever.

Producer David C. Fein had this to say about the restoration and release:

I couldn’t be prouder and more thrilled to have completed the film in 4K. Paramount offered unprecedented access to the original elements and exceptional support and the results are stunning.  Utilizing the latest discoveries and innovations of modern film production, The Director’s Edition delivers so much more today than was previously possible.  It’s an adventure you’ll never forget!
