Star Trek: Prodigy EP 5 – Terror Firma [REVIEW]

Following last week’s setup for the first two-parter of Star Trek: Prodigy, the Cadets are stuck on a distant “planet” that’s trying to eat them.

Just 10 Kilometers

Hologram Janeway was able to reach out to the “cadets” via coms in the broken ship that Gywnn used as an escape pod. While the team was distracted by the communication, the RunAway was pulled down into a ravine by the planet’s tendril branches. So the team has to hoof it 10K. Gwynn uses her psychically linked weapon thing to make a brace for her fractured leg. With Zero as the navigator, the kids start heading towards the Protostar. But it doesn’t matter where the kids go, the now aptly named “Murder Planet” keeps shifting and making them go around in circles. That night the Planet makes their nightmares a reality with this huge version of a watcher from the mines. Gwynn, using some quick thinking, realized real fire, not phaser fire, was its weakness. Eventually, the vindictive planet decided to shower the kids with acid rain. While it may be a good idea for digestion. The kids luckily find a crashed Klingon Bird of Prey to use as a shelter. Luckily there were some rations on board that Jankom Pog was able to whip up into a stew. While Dal and Gwynn were chatting off alone, they realized that yes the terrain might change, but the stars don’t. Using good old celestial navigation, the kids run into Dreadnok. The team thinks Gwynn has betrayed them, but as the kids run away the planet’s vines snare Gwynn. Even though she fights back, they are too much. Luckily the planet doesn’t like Dreadnok either and tries to devour him as well. He transforms and gives chase after the rest of the kids.

Holograms can only do so much…or can they?

HJ meanwhile does everything in her power to keep the ship from being torn apart. She doesn’t have her old command privileges, but asks herself what would the real Janeway do? Using the ship’s sonic cleaning array she was able to stave off the vines a bit longer. Trying to reserve power, she starts shutting down nonessentials like the replicators. But there is a huge drain on the system from the Protostar containment unit….. which she has no idea about.

The Diviner Descends

The Diviner transports down to the surface to find the Protostar waiting to be saved. Gwynn, still struggling with the vines, calls out to her father for help. But he made his choice: the ship. Luckily it was a decoy by the planet. The Diviner breaks free and heads back to his ship. The kids minus Gwynn make it back to the ship as well and run a quick rescue to save Gwynn. The Diviner makes chase at warp speed gaining on the much small Federation ship. Zero suddenly has an epiphany: the ship is named after the experimental PROTOSTAR warp drive system! Gwynn chooses to leave her Father behind like he did to her, and with the understanding of how to work the ship’s systems, activates the 3rd warp engine and blasts off away from her father. Where did they go? Who knows!

CAPTAIN’S LOG

A solid way to carry through last week’s episode and tie it all up in a bow before the show goes on hiatus until January. We now have a fully formed team. I have a feeling the next episode is going to deal with the new dynamic between Gywnn and Dal trying to take command. My guess is Gwynn will be the XO/Science offer role for the ship. While Dal will still be the idea guy in charge. As for Rok, we know she’s the muscle, but having that childish charm makes her so darn likable! Hopefully, we can see her in some defined role on the ship. Zero as the Helmsman and Jakom Pog as Engineer. Don’t forget Murph as……. Murph. Are you ready for the show to take a break already?!
