KPOP Demon Hunters is in the thick of an intense battle this Awards Season. Netflix had a virtual press conference with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans to talk up their pop culture moment. Ejae, who brings voice to Huntr/x’s leader. So, a lot of talent in one room! When it comes to those iconic songs, Kang explained how they maneuvered through picking each individual song.

“So it’s just a very intensive process, and it took years, interwoven. Interwoven, yeah.” the director shared. “And, every song was kind of figured out in a different way, and some of them were a lot easier than others, like ‘Your Idol’ was probably our easiest sign, because we knew exactly what the song needed to do at the end.”

Kang continued, “The idea of the Saja Boys was there at the very beginning of this concept? Then, we saw ‘Golden.‘ We didn’t really know what purpose it needed to serve. Until pretty late, it was the last song that we ever finalized.”

You can’t really talk about KPOP Demon Hunters and not discuss Ejae. The woman behind Rumi’s singing voice and songwriter for the group. She still can’t believe that Rei Ami and Audrey Nuna were chosen and they’ve all been on this journey together. Here’s what she had to say.

“I did not know them before the movie came out. I kind of saw them in passing, but other than that, we never worked together,” Ejae recalled. “It was like separate recordings, but none of the recordings happened together. Yeah, together for the vocals or the or the voice, our voice acting. Everybody was in separate sessions, and then you just hope that it just clicks together. We’ve met for the first time. Like, working together was literally at the premiere!”

She continued, “Actually, working during rehearsal for Jimmy Fallon and SNL. We clicked and it was great. I got really lucky. We got really lucky, it’s truly rare too.”
