As audiences check out the film, there’s a certain scene that has gotten people’s attention. While we won’t spoil it for you here, if you’ve watched the film, thanks to our friend Brandon Davis of Phase Hero we’ve learned more about the making of the moment with stars Stephen Lang and Oona Chaplin.
Oona Chaplin: “We shot it really simply. It was very straightforward, going to set up a little… It’s a very simple scene between two people in a small space talking to each other. There’s very clear dynamics that happen. The beautiful thing was that we got to that part after I’d been kind of practicing and being on the volume with the people for a while. So, you just sink into this incredible intimacy of the work. So, it’s just dunking into this place of really immense creativity and play, that I remember from that day.“
“For me, it was just wrestling with this huge piece, which is like, yeah, there’s the dynamic here, but then there’s also the whole origin story and the place of deep, deep trauma that she comes from and the place, the place of having earned her stripes, that I really wanted to honor as well, you know?“
“It was a juicy scene, man. They had a lot of fun with it, too. They made it look cool.“

Stephen Lang: “It’s exotic. Entering into this, into the yurt, itself… Because think of the world outside. The world outside is barren and it’s very rugged. But when you walk in, you’re in the warmth of a place. There’s something womb like about that yurt. It seems to me it’s not… And he takes a minute, he doesn’t assimilate immediately, you know what I mean? But there’s a whole quality of submission which is what is that scene is about dominance and submission, among other things, you know, and submission is not something that one associates with this character, with Quaritch, at all. So, it takes a very, very special, powerful person, presence to be able to elicit that kind of submission from him and that’s Varang.“
