Journal With Witch continues Makio’s adventures in taking care of her niece Asa in Ep. 2 “Wrap”, and with a growing cast of characters too. Mostly in the form of Makio’s friends and acquaintances, but with a hint that Asa has her own friends that will soon be introduced as well. All in preparation for Makio and Asa to finally each deal with their grief in their own way, what with an impending visit to Asa’s old home on the way.

All with Asa’s imagination flavoring the scene to boot.

Journal With Witch Ep. 2 “Wrap” is the second episode (you can read my review of Ep. 1 here) of this slice of life comedy-drama anime series. Said anime is the anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by Tomoko Yamashita.

Shuka (Durarara!!x2 Shō91 DaysNatsume’s Book of Friends: Fifth Season) is the animation studio behind this anime. Miyuki Oshiro is the director of this anime, with Kōhei Kiyasu as the writer, and Kensuke Ushio as the composer for the music.

Speaking of the music: the opening theme song for Journal with Witch is “Sonare” (ソナーレ) by Tomoo. Meanwhile, “Kotozute” (言伝; lit. ’Hearsay’) by Bialystocks is the ending theme song.

Synopsis

Seriously, her capacity for imagination is amazing.

Alas, Journal With Witch is still an ongoing anime series. In fact, Ep. 2 “Wrap” only just made its debut on January 11, 2026 exclusively on Crunchyroll. Thus, here’s the synopsis for this week’s episode from Crunchyroll below:

“Makio’s friend visits to meet Asa. Later, Makio meets with an old acquaintance for some advice.”

Journal With Witch Ep. 2 “Wrap”: The Good

Their friendship dynamic in a nutshell.

Much of Journal With Witch Ep. 2 “Wrap” is essentially introducing new characters into the lives of Makio Kōdai (voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro (JP)) and her niece Asa Takumi (voiced by Fuko Mori (JP)). And boy, we’ve got some interesting new cast for them to interact with. We’ve got Nana Daigo (voiced by Eriko Matsui (JP)), who’s essentially Makio’s BFF and provides essentially a big sister figure to Asa. Then we’ve got Shingo Kasamachi (voiced by Junichi Suwabe (JP)), who was Makio’s ex-boyfriend and still remains a big fan of her writings, who provides an interesting amount of advice to Makio about taking care of Asa. We get a teaser about Asa’s friend Emiri, who texts her about her situation, but no interactions so far. However, what we’ve got so far is a very interesting story that this cast of new characters add to.

On top of that, we’ve got a very interesting animation style from Shuka. It features a semi-realistic animation style akin to seinen and josei manga, which is quite accurate because Tomoko Yamashita’s manga that this anime was adapted from is in fact a josei manga. And yet, Shuka’s animators also mix things up by adding in fantastical scenes straight out of Asa’s imagination. When the mundanely domestic scene of a Japanese house is randomly replaced with scenes right out of an Indian-esque bazaar, you know that Asa’s imagination (and Shuka’s animators) have their imaginations working overtime.

Oh, and kudos to this episode for the detail to the cooking scenes. In fact, this episode goes so deep into cooking homemade potstickers/gyoza that you can even try to make it for yourself at home. It’s certainly a culinary delight for fans of Japanese cooking.

Journal With Witch Ep. 2 “Wrap”: The Bad

With these two definitely having a complex relationship with each other, as befitting exes.

Alas, as great as the potsticker cooking scene was, the quality of the animated food itself was merely…not bad. Perfectly adequate, I would say. At the very least, you can clearly tell which food item is which. However, it’s not exceptionally detailed. Not in the way other anime series like Black Butler does food. This is one of this anime’s weaknesses: that it doesn’t quite go the extra mile for food animation, likely for budget reasons. It’s a small thing to be sure, but made all the more noticeable by the focus on the food, and I wish that they had gone that extra mile.

Aside from that, there is no action in Journal With Witch Ep. 2 “Wrap”. None whatsoever. This is a slice of life comedy-drama about an aunt and her niece dealing with grief, not an action-heavy shonen battle anime. If you want action, you’re going to have to look elsewhere for that.
