Goat’s stars sat down for a delightful press conference to breakdown the process of making this film. Stephen Curry’s basketball movie is coming out in the next few weeks. He, director Tyree Dillihay, Caleb McLaughlin, Gabrielle Union, and Patton Oswalt all came through. During the press conference they remembered this story from the earliest stages.
It’s been a long journey for Dillihay, and he told the moderator, Ash Crossan, about how focusing on an animal world in Goat really unlocked their freedom as animators. This movie is lush and the world feels like there’s tons of room for more stories with our favorite goat and this cast of characters.
Dillihay began, “ This animal world presents itself for a lot of comedy. A lot of authentic moments and sometimes silly stuff. I think everybody here has probably over-indulged in a cat video? These present the most amazing opportunities for animators to go crazy. It adds this entertainment for the audience? So, why not!”
Steph Curry on Goat’s story

Golden State’s biggest star is the driving force behind Goat. His personal road to the NBA serves as the jumping off point for our main character Will Harris. But, Will is a literal goat rather than just aspiring to be one in the game of Roarball. Curry knew their approach would have to be a little different than what folks out there expect! The results are a sports movie that stands tall.
“In my journey, we knew that the story that we could tell wasn’t just a sports movie. Obviously Roarball is like basketball in an all animal world,” Curry explained. “But, it’s not just a sports story. It’s something, that I think, is for the entire family to come enjoy, and bring something that’s relevant to life. So, we knew that we’d have a great opportunity to reach a lot of people with this.”
Gabrielle Union on making Goat’s second lead shine
Jett Fillmore is an inspiration for Will and anyone who loves the Thorns. Gabrielle Union brings her to life. Jett’s given a lot to the game. But, being paired with a new teammate is going to shake up the Thorns’ season. Union talked about her sports background and finding different ways to lead. It’s useful for both younger audiences and grown-ups too!
“As an athlete, you’re looking up to, you know, to older girls. And teens and women, and it feels it feels like a world away,” she told us. “Like, I’m never gonna be that good. Growing up, I’m looking at Teresa Witherspoon, I’m looking at Cheryl Swoopes, I’m looking at Lisa Leslie. So, while I was getting 17 and 7, she was like, ‘I had a 100.’ Our trajectory was gonna be a little different.
Building a legend

“But, we were always encouraged to look to these Herculean efforts, as that is greatness. Greatness has to look one way, or you’ve got to be hard-nosed,” Union recalled. “I went from being a ‘bull in a china shop’ type of a woman, to learning different leadership styles and different ways of communicating to be a better teammate. In life and on the court. And Jett has a very similar journey. I’m just honored to be able to play Jett and to be a part of this. And, hopefully play a character that boys and girls can grow up to want to emulate.”
