Valentine’s Day is almost here and Crunchyroll is ready to celebrate a season of love. There are so many romantic anime out there to tickle your fancy this month and beyond. Love stories are all over the place in the anime landscape.
Love is a subplot in shonen battles and in slice of life delights. It’s all around us, whether it’s unbreakable bonds of friendship or vows to rescue the love of your life. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, we’ve gathered some of our current faves for you to stream headed into the holiday.
You and I Are Polar Opposites – Valentine’s Day
A brand-new favorite that got some love during the Spring Anime Preview event at Alamo Drafthouse. You and I Are Polar Opposites is going to be great for fans of 10 Things I Hate About You! Suzuki is absolutely obsessed with her crush Yusuke. She’s outgoing and cheerful and the boy is the most reserved kid you’ve ever met. But, they do a great job of complimenting each other. It’s hard not to feel good after seeing episode one. Definitely check this out if you’re a romance fan.
Here’s what Crunchyroll says about the series: “A spunky twist on a classic high school sweetheart love story. Suzuki is a typical high school girl in love, but the guy she’s fallen for is nothing like her! While she’s cheerful, outgoing, and always trying to fit in, her classmate Yusuke Tani is stoic, quiet, and doesn’t seem to care what people think of him. Will Suzuki be able to overcome her anxieties and ask him out, or will she discover that opposites really don’t attract?”
Hana-Kimi
Do you love Ouran High School Host Club or Twelfth Night? Maybe She’s The Man is more your speed? Then Hana-Kimi is right here for you. Mizuki Ashiya is going to charm her way right into your heart. She’s trying to meet her idol and there’s some gender-swap shenanigans to accomplish that goal. This anime is beloved by a large fanbase online and if you dive-in, it’s not hard to see why!
Check out a quick synopsis: “Mizuki Ashiya is on a mission: disguise herself as a boy and enroll in a male boarding school to meet her idol, high jump star Izumi Sano. But after successfully infiltrating the school, she discovers he’s suddenly quit the sport! Now Mizuki must dodge suspicion, protect her cover, and somehow reach the boy she came all this way for—all while surviving the chaos of an all-boys dorm!”
Tamon’s B-Side – Valentine’s Day
Utage Kinoshita is a maid on a mission. Have you watched Maid in Manhattan recently? Then, you’re going to be pleased. What happens with your crush is completely different in private. (But, not in a bad way!) Learning to love all the different parts of a person can be tough. But, Tamon’s B-Side makes it super easy.
Crunchyroll teases our maid’s dilemma: “Utage Kinoshita is a high school girl who works part-time as a housekeeper. She has devoted her life to her favorite idol, Tamon Fukuhara, from the group F/ACE. Then one day, Utage ends up being assigned to Tamon’s house! There she discovers that off-stage, he is nothing like his wild idol persona. A gloomy, introverted boy with no self-confidence, Utage still finds herself falling for him anyway.”
In the Clear Moonlit Dusk
Two Princes dance before you. Go ahead and stream now. We’re mostly kidding. But, this delightful will they/won’t they romantic drama sees princely students finding some common ground. But, is the friendship between a girl with royal aura and the upperclassman just that. Or, is it something more? Understated, but gorgeous.
Read more about what they’ve got going: “Yoi Takiguchi is a first-year high school student, admired for her handsome looks and honest heart, which earned her the nickname “Prince.” One day, she bumps into Kohaku Ichimura, an upperclassman and another “Prince.” As the two grow closer, is what blossoms between them friendship or love? A youthful love story about a boy and a girl who are both called “Princes” begins.”
The Villainess Is Adored by the Prince of the Neighbor Kingdom
Villainesses are all the rage right now. Who doesn’t like a mean woman? Well, Tiararose Lapis Clamentile might have met her match. Aquasteed’s finest could change the game for her in the arena of love and beyond. If you love an Isekai, this one is definitely for you! (Sometimes the longer the title, the better.)
Crunchyroll explains what’s going on: “Tiararose Lapis Clamentile is set to marry Hartknights, crown prince of Lapis Lazuli—until she suddenly remembers her past life and realizes she’s been reincarnated into her favorite game, The Ring of Lapis Lazuli, as the doomed villainess! But just as she’s about to lose hope, the crown prince of Aquasteed proposes instead. Could this unexpected turn finally lead to a happy ending of her own?”
