The Super Bowl is a perfect place to drop something like Disclosure Day’s Big Game spot. Besides spelling that out right in the name, debuting a tease for a summer blockbuster during this epic sporting event has always been a powerful part of the playbook. Filmmakers like Steven Spielberg made sure of that, and now he’s part of a follow-up featurette that explains where the idea for his latest extraterrestrial adventure has come from. Leave it to something so simple as the director’s personal statement to seemingly unlock even more clues as to what this enigmatic picture is trying to achieve.

Steven Spielberg’s Blockbuster Roots Seem To Run Deep In Disclosure Day

Freshly revealed by Universal Pictures, the latest piece of Disclosure Day marketing feels like a warm throwback. Displaying clips of Josh O’Connor, Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, and Domingo Colman’s roles in the film, the action in this release slated for June 12th looks as awe-inspiring and nerve shredding as ever.

But between those glimpses, you get to see the legendary director (and creator of this very story) provide background into what inspired his latest project. I proudly share that footage with you below:

If you somehow didn’t know that Steven Spielberg was fascinated by aliens, you might just be from out of town yourself. Yet somehow hearing the man himself reinforce this fact through his own words reminds me of why I became a fan of his in my childhood.

At the same time, some of the things Mr. Spielberg shared above have me ready to dig deeper into my wild Disclosure Day theory about what sort of story it’s telling. So now it’s time for me to brush off my tin foil hat, and share what stood out.

Disclosure Day’s Classic Spielberg Curiosity Finds A New Angle For An Old Question

Reflecting on my thoughts on how Colman Domingo’s character could be riffing on a famous space based conspiracy theory, Disclosure Day has started to become a slight obsession of the year. I’m sorry to report that after listening to the Jurassic Park mastermind reinforce his obsession with the unknown, that hasn’t changed. Though I dare anyone to try and not perk up after reading the following remarks from Steven Spielberg:

People’s question about what is not only going on in our skies, but what is going on in our worlds, in our realities, has reached a critical mass … and if someone knows we’re not alone, why haven’t we been told?

So what’s a good reason for withholding information like the existence of extraterrestrial life? Well, personally, I think that it’s to make sure any interest parties can tell the story the way they best see fit. Mr. Spielberg’s fascination with the unknown feels revamped for a “post-truth” world in Disclosure Day. Which means the motivations of this universe’s Government could be aiming for a very specific objective.

Colin Firth looks ahead with focus wearing sensors on his head in Disclosure Day.

The Government’s Potential Motivations In Disclosure Day

With that pillar in place, I think the government depicted in the picture isn’t afraid of letting the world learning aliens exist. Colin Firth and his clandestine antagonists could be focused on what that truth could mean for the status quo power structure. Are you going to believe in business as usual after discovering we’re not alone in this universe? How about when even religious devotees start to fall in comfortably with that concept? I didn’t think so.

I don’t think “The Government” is trying to hide aliens any further in Disclosure Day. Instead they’re hoping to gain control of the message in a way that preserves traditional power structures. Information is no longer the objective, but rather who gets to control the message to their benefit.

Apologies to Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, as they’re probably debating whether it’s worth it to black bag me until June 12th or not. Much like Steven Spielberg, my own fixation with uncovering the truth has led me down a very specific path. So I’ll naturally continue to confirm, debunk, and reshape my outlook with every new piece of info that drops.

Though if any interested parties are wondering, my silence can be bought with an early screening of Disclosure Day, and a guaranteed spot in the junket rotation. In the meantime, keep a browser tab tuned into THS’ Movie News archives, to learn what “they” want you to know.
