ChaO is a most fascinatingly bizarre anime film. It’s one of the newest anime films from Studio 4°C (Berserk: Golden Age Arc, Children of the Sea, All You Need Is Kill), features Toei Company as the distributor, and with Yasuhiro Aoki as the director. As for the anime film itself: it seems to be Ponyo, but with all the characters as adults, as well as featuring some highly offbeat humor and drawn with some strangely and intentionally grotesque artwork. All for the comedy, of course, mirroring some Western adult animation in style. Thus, it’s not hard to see why GKIDS would take an interest in this, especially since soon, we shall see if this blend of fishy humor and romance works.

GKIDS is proud to announce that they are bringing the romantic-comedy anime film ChaO overseas to NA theaters. As part of this announcement, they have even released a brand new official trailer for this anime film. With said trailer revealing that we will get to see this anime film in NA theaters on April 10, 2026. Now as for that trailer? You can watch it either on YouTube, or just look below to see it and the new key visual:

Very fishy-looking being there, isn’t she?

The fishy puns will never stop.

Honestly, this look like a delightfully bizarre anime film. Much of it due to ChaO‘s extremely eccentric animation style, with some intentionally unattractive looks for the side characters and an oddly adorable art style for someone who is essentially a giant, walking fish. I’m already sensing a theme here about not judging someone based on the cover of their book, no matter how scaly they are. All in all, it looks like an anime film that might be worth your time to check out for the fishy romcom.
