It’s been quite a while since we’ve last seen Charlie’s Angels on our screens. We had the early 2000s reboot with Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore, and now, according to THR, Sony is bringing them back.
The studio is developing a new feature version of Charlie’s Angels from screenwriter Pete Chiarelli. He’s known for movies like The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock and the adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians.
Sources are saying that Drew Barrymore and her production company Flower Films are on board to produce this upcoming adaptation. As for stars or a director, there’s no information about that at this time.
Charlie’s Angels started off as a TV series on ABC that ran from 1976 to 1981 and starred Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaquelyn Smith. They were a group of female detectives working for the Townsend Agency for the mysterious and anonymous Charlie Townsend. They were liaisoned by Bosley. It was brough to the big screen by Columbia Pictures in 2000 with Liu, Barrymore, and Diaz in the starring roles. That film was a huge success at the box office and spawned the sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in 2003.
They also attempted a new TV series in 2011 but it was canceled after seven episodes. Finally, the latest try at rebooting the franchise came in 2019 with a feaure starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska directed by Elizabeth Banks. That movie was not as successful at the box office.
This new project is in early development and we’ll keep you updated as we get more news.
