The world is still feeling the impact of Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show; which is only one of two major wins for his career. The man also known as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio also brought home the gold at the 2026 Grammys, making waves with his dance-worthy beats and heartfelt love of Puerto Rico. With the rapper/actor set for his first starring film role, that very subject which sits so very close to his heart has become an opportunity of a lifetime.
Puerto Rican Rap Talent, And Award Winning Actors, Are Colliding To Make Porto Rico
Reporting from Deadline has Bad Bunny teaming with fellow Puerto Rican rapper René “Residente” Pérez Joglar, on a project known as Porto Rico. Residente is a co-writer, and also director, on this “epic Caribbean western and historical drama,” with Academy Award winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu participating as an executive producer. Co-written between Residente and Birdman writer Alexander Dinelaris, previous reporting from the source cited above shared this early synopsis:
…a historical drama based on the life of Puerto Rican revolutionary José Maldonado Román, known as Águila Blanca (White Eagle), set on the island in the late 19th century. Maldonado Román fought against colonialism by leading a gang of ex-convicts to vindicate Puerto Rico as it sought its identity as a country.
Rounding out Porto Rico’s impressive acting roster on display are Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton, and Javier Bardem. That’s a hell of a lineup, if you ask me; and Bad Bunny has definitely honed the chops to make it happen. Which is fantastic, as I can’t think of a better part to kick off his potential leading man era.

Porto Rico Is A No-Brainer Vehicle For Bad Bunny’s First Film Lead
If it wasn’t for Bad Bunny’s 2023 exit from El Muerto, the Debí Tirar Más Fotos artist could have upgraded his acting career a lot sooner. Of course, the overall history of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe shows us that this was probably for the best.
With a potential story that ties into his proud Puerto Rican roots, while highlighting historical events the general public probably isn’t familiar with, Porto Rico feels like the movie for the mastermind of “Benito Bowl” to hang his hat on.
Unfortunately, we don’t have any information on intended production or release dates for Porto Rico. However, if you want to watch Bad Bunny’s acting efforts in action, you can stream Caught Stealing – which is currently available through a Netflix subscription.
