About Doctor Who: The Movie

Originally created as a made-for-TV flick in 1996, the feature marked a collaboration between the BBC and FOX. The movie debuted years after the final episode of Doctor Who’s original series run ended in the UK; it brought back the show’s final Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, to open the feature. Shortly after landing in San Francisco just ahead of the new millennium, McCoy regenerates into the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann). McGann carries the rest of the film, which sees him go up against his old rival The Master (Eric Roberts) with the help of his new friend Grace (Daphne Ashbrook).

Although FOX and BBC hoped the release of Doctor Who: The Movie would get American audiences invested in the sci-fi franchise, the film didn’t find widespread success at its initial debut. However, in the decades that followed, Whovians continued to rediscover the feature. It’s since become a sort of cult classic within the fandom, with a lot of love shown toward McGann as the Doctor in particular. (Enough that he eventually made a few appearances in Doctor Who’s revival series to reprise his role.)

Pre-orders for Doctor Who: The Movie launch February 20, with a UK release planned for May 25.
